Friday, November 7. 2008Kabelmanagement..., my ass!
Meine Wünsche waren: Star Trek: Patrick Stewart Michael Dorn Terry Farrell Jeffrey Combs (erfüllt) Casey Biggs Marc Alaimo (erfüllt) Roxanne Dawson Scott Bakula BSG: Edward James Olmos (erfüllt) Katee Sackhoff James Callis (erfüllt) Tricia Helfer Grace Park Richard Hatch (erfüllt) usw. Three bloody years ago... I found an image of this lovely lovely Kazuya action figure on the internet (Namco's webpage) and I swore that I'd get my hands on one of these.
A lot of people got hurt in the process (see caption of the image of the old article), not to mention the poor cardboard box I shredded to pieces when it arrived today. But it did arrive, can you imagine. Funnily it was Saturday, July 16th 2005 when I wrote the first article and it was Saturday, July 19th 2008 when I ordered the figure, after spotting it in the newly arrived catalogue. Anyway, Lara has a companion now...
Last.fm baut Seite um - Schock
Wenn Old Baldy (aka Patrick Stewart) kommt sicher.
Dort lief "I Want It That Way" von den Backstreet Boys. I Bought It on ebay". Zusammenfassend habe ich heute folgendes miteinander verbunden: Jane Eyre - The Eyre Affair - Heroes - "I Want It That Way" von den Backstreet Boys - Weird Al Monday, June 2. 2008Open Mind Index - Exceeds Expectations
My goal for this months open mind index was to reach 110, instead I have achieved the unbelievable score of 121.
And all this just from listening to less Nightwish and less regular Rock or Pop. The downside is that now I don't have a goal anymore. Wednesday, May 14. 2008F*** the f***ing Panda Pee?
So Jan had this silly idea to complete his frell-machine... we've watched way too much Farscape and Battlestar Galactica lately.
The Frell-Machine is a "program" that curses any entered subject (like your own name, someone elses name, Windows...) or just generally curses. It uses different curses from all kinds of TV shows, or other genres, like for example the word frell which is a placeholder for the f-word in Farscape, as is frak in BSG. My most favourite curse right now is: Frak the frelling shiong mao niao! shiong mao niao was used in Firefly and means panda urine. If you want to try out the frell-machine (please keep in mind that it is still being finetuned), follow this link: http://www.janbeinersdorf.de/frell/ Friday, May 2. 2008OMI - 101
The new OMI (Open Mind Index) has been calculated and I have actually managed to improve mine from 97 to 101. My current goal of getting at least 100 was reached.
It was achieved by mainly reducing Rock and Pop. No new genre (like Industrial Metal) has entered the "My Musical Taste"-diagram yet. Tuesday, April 29. 2008All Along The ... Battlestar

Battlestar" Wednesday, April 23. 2008Last.fm OMI (Open Mind Index)
I always considered myself open minded, when it comes to music, then I met the OMI on last.fm.
Apparently you need an OMI of 120 to truly join the Open Mind Index group, which I don't have yet, damn. I quickly found out how the OMI works: Apparently it takes ones top 50 artists and looks at the genres they are in. Unfortunately I have a loooooot of artists who are either in the rock or pop category. How helpful. Well yes, I know I should get for example Genesis and Robbie Williams and some other main stream artists out of there as they do not really reflect my musical taste, but what can I do. Also my "female vocalists" part of the pie is rather large. This is a really silly tag to take into consideration if you ask me. About 50% of my playlist are female artists, but most of them are nothing alike when it comes to their music; like Tarja Turunen, Christina Aguilera, Katie Melua and Mary J. Blige for example. Well, well... to improve my rating I have been listening more to artists who have not been tagged as rock or pop so much, like Metallica, Linkin Park, Amy Winehouse, John Williams and Kaiser Chiefs. My OMI for April was 97, I am now anxious to find out what it will be in May. I think I have good chances to get the genres Nu Metal, Trash Metal, Industrial (Metal), Indie, Soundtrack, RNB, Soul, Electronica and Trip Hop, maybe even Reggae into my rating, sooner or later. Tuesday, November 13. 2007The New Nightwish
Nightwish has a new album, "Dark Passion Play", the first without Tarja Turunen. Are they still Nightwish?
My first answer would be "yes", but when listening to their new album closely, I am starting to have my doubts. While some songs are great, and in case of "The Poet and the Pendulum" fantastic, others do not match my expectations at all. Too many of the new songs are a bit boring or have annoying bits (especially lyric-wise). It is not so much the new voice that had ruined some of the songs... The Good Songs The Poet and the Pendulum (5/5) I love the song and it is by far the one I've listened to most. It is very long with almost 14 minutes but never gets boring. Bye Bye Beautiful (4/5) Another good song on this album, however the background story behind it ruins the song. Amaranth (4/5) Amaranth is another song I like. The O.K. Songs These are the songs that are ok to listen to, they reach (3/5) Cadence of her Last Breath Sahara For The Heart I once had 7 Days to the Wolves (even through this tends to annoy) Last Of The Wilds The Not So Good Songs Master Passion Greed annoying lyrics Eva plain boring Whoever brings the Night repetitive, annoying The Islander horrible, annoying, boring Meadows of Heaven annoying lyrics Friday, September 14. 2007My Top Song of "Each" Artist ...
I was browsing last.fm, when I saw that the most popular songs of any artist (from the last 6 months) aren't always the same as my favourite song of this artist (based on how often I have heard it and the rating I've given it on i-tunes). So here is a comparison.
I only picked the artists that made it into my top 50 on last.fm. There are some problems when it comes to artists like Madonna, where new songs are at the top of the list... but nevermind, my song preferences are also "recent", and in some cases I might have given a "newer" song (e.g. Elevation) although I have a lot of older songs by the same artist I also like) Here's my profile by the way: http://www.last.fm/user/tombraidergirl/ 1. Ayumi Hamasaki Obviously I've been listening to a lot of Ayu since I joined last.fm... Last.fm #1: evolution My #1: Rainbow (no rank on last.fm) 2. Friday, August 10. 2007Me VS css
For days I've been working on a new design for my website, and it's driving me mad. I've never been that angry about css and html or even my server.
I swear, there is a troll sitting on the server, messing up everything I just created. I first started with a very messy version with images mainly in the main folder and one external style sheet, using css formatting only, using no tables at all and everything worked fine, till I began to try and get the backgrounds of two neighbouring columns to reach down to the end of the site.... This failed as only the one with the "longer content" seemed to reach down to the end of the page. Then I tried using minimum-height, following a manual for it in every aspect, but it did not work... After several tries, each time beginning from scratch, I gave up and decided to go back to tables, at which point Firefox decided it didn't like tables any more. And even though I could not find any reason, any error and had a valid code it insisted that there was "text" between my two "td"s - I swear, it was "td closed" "td opened", there was nothing in-between, not even a space. In-between, whenever I had enough of the trouble with tables or floating divs, I got over to moving the images into a separate folder to get some order. This worked fine, till I tried linking them. I used the same method as on my regular Website (I must say, that the location where I'm trying all this is exactly like the one on the regular site, is is just another subfolder on the same server, they just have a different name and a different domain assigned to them) a link would look like this using the / at the beginning to indicate that it is relative to the main folder; this was I can use the same link in an include file without any trouble... or so I thought. This would not work... Then suddenly a similar problem turned up with one of my includes... I normally use include('includefile.inc.php'); or include("includefile.inc.php"); to include a file in several pages that has always the same content... but suddenly include('head_d.inc.php'); was not good enough for my server and it took me 20 Minutes to figure out that it was because I used ' ' instead of " " which is very strange, as there was no conflict with other 's or "s.... Yesterday... It was suddenly the other way around and I had to exchange " and ' again... Silly server.... One other thing happened yesterday. I finally decided on accepting a compromise and using css. I already had a running version of how I liked it but with all image and stylesheet links (and content) a bit too messy for my taste. So I copied it and exchanged the links, then modified the menu and then tested it. Suddenly something I did not touch at all did not work any more. Just-like-that.... I tried to find the error, I removed all non-essential information from the page, I copied the working source of the part in question into my framework but everything was unsuccessful. So it must be something I used in one of the two surrounding divs... However I could not find anything that explained why something that was supposed to be at the beginning of the right column was at the end of it. There was no "clear" or anything... So I started from scratch again.... Continue reading "Me VS css" Friday, August 3. 2007TV shows from a to z
At first this was just something I said when some friends repeatedly wanted us to watch NCIS. I said to my boyfriend: "I bet there is one TV show for each letter of the Alphabet I'd rather watch.
So here is my list: A ALF - I always watched it, when I was younger. Ally Mc Beal - Alas I have never seen the end of it. Angel - I think this would be my actual favourite in this category. Atlantis - See Stargate. B Babylon5 - Decent sci-fi show. Battlestar Galactica (New Series) - This is one of my absolute favourites. Buffy - Hard to decide which I like more, Buffy or BSG... so I guess this makes two for B C I actually don't have a show with C I watch regularly or have watched in the past. I have seen a few episodes of the following three. Charlies Angles - Some time ago, well. I would probably watch something else before this. CSI - I just watched an episode today, I am just a bit confused with all the spinoffs. Charmed - I know that many people who liked Buffy also liked this, I however don't find it that special. D Dawson's Creek - The only show with D I watched more than once. It was alright I guess. Deep Space Nine - Yes, I have listed it under Star Trek as well. Bad girl! (actually in German we would have House here, as it is called Dr. House there, but as my blog is in English, I will leave that for later.) E Enterprise - Not as bad as some said. Not worse than the end of Voyager.... And if anyone says, that this belongs to S, as in Star Trek... If I had to, I'd watch George Clooney in ER. F Friends - definitely Friends. "We were on a break!" Firefly - Alas there isn't enough of this show to judge it against Friends. Farscape - or the prequel to the later Stargate SG-1? Full House - This was good, when I was about 12 or so... Futurama - I am not a big fan of these type of show but if any, then this one, I guess, or South Park? G Galactica - now that's cheating, isn't it? H Hercules - I always connect this show with Latin homework. Probably because it was always on on Sundays and I waited for the last moment to do my Monday- Latin-Homework. House - I like the humour and it is the only medical series that's not boring. I I??? I've never heard of any of the shows listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._television_series#I J JAG - This was on after Voyager for some time. Joey - Not a brilliant as friends, but decent enough. K King of Queens - Quite alright if you need something to laugh. L L-Word - The same friend (or one of them) who wants us to watch NCIS also brought along this show. What shall I say. Love it or hate it. Lost ??? - I must confess I have not seen it, yet. And I don't feel like just jumping into it, in the middle of the show. I have to rent the first season, I guess... M Magnum - Sexy man, at least that's what I thought a while ago. He's still alright, I guess. N Well, here we are, NCIS category.... NUMB3RS - I have seen about two episodes. I like it, especially since it has a lot to do with the stuff I learned at university. I'd watch more if I had the time. But there are other shows higher up in my priority list. O SKIP P Prince of Bel-Air - I love Will Smith!!! And yes, I cheated again, it is originally called The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air but not where I live, so... F was full anyway. Q Quantum Leap - Hello Captain Archer. Well this show is quite old-fashioned, but ok... R Remington Steele - I also love Pierce Brosnan. Roseanne - Long time ago, but yes, I watched that too. S Star Trek ... - Oh I love TNG (Data and Riker and... well all of them), I hate Kirk, I love Sisko without hair and Janeway, well not a big fan of her and don't like her hair at all! Stargate ... - I love O'Neill and Daniel Jackson, and Atlantis is alright too, my favourite there is Rodney McKay. Please count Stargate SG-1 as I might use the other shows at A, D, E, T and V. T TNG - see Star Trek. 24 (Twenty-four) - I LOOOOOOOOVE this show, unfortunately I have to watch this alone, as my boyfriend gets too nervous when watching it. So I always tape it and watch it all in one go (using headphones), when he's busy, but he keeps asking what's happening so I usually tell him all the events of 4 hours in 15 minutes. U nope V Voyager - Decent series except for Janeway's hair and the finish... W Witchblade - I have only seen one episode as I never figured out if the show even made it to German television. X X-Files - Mulder and Scully, they are something... Xena - I have not seen this as often, I preferred Hercules. Y & Z I had two for X so don't complain! Thursday, July 5. 2007Star Trek - The Next Generation (1)
I named this article (1) as I suspect that I might write more than just this one article.
A few days ago I decided to force my boyfriend to watch TNG again, basically because he said he wanted to watch something we haven't watched during the last three months. (What he probably meant is that he is not willing to watch Buffy or Stargate again, damn...) We have just watched the last two seasons of Voyager and all episodes of Enterprise (during some computer work we did...) And we also have watched all Battlestar Galactica (New Series) during the evenings. So now we are watching TNG. I don't understand why everyone always condemns the first season of any series, as this was a quite good start - maybe that is because it was a quite good series. They had the best characters in my opinion and none of the other Star Trek series' had Data! Now we have reached this silly Episode called Too Short a Season - this must be one of the worst Episodes... How boring, who cares about this silly Admiral getting younger and younger. We already have one Wesley. Friday, April 20. 2007Vista VS. XP VS. me
Side note: This is a fight between two operating systems, me does refer to myself, not the other crappy MS product.
Phase 1: February 2007 I made a horrible mistake by installing Vista on my secondary hard drive. As a computer science student I got a free version, as long as I only used it for studies, otherwise I would probably not have bothered, but doing what I do you need to know the enemy. At first everything went well but when I started up XP for the next time I noticed that something was wrong. The PC (under XP) started crashing. Nothing unusual with any Windows you might say, but I never had a single crash on this PC my whole life and it has been running for over three years now, with the occasional swapping of single hardware items (none of them recently)... What happened: The screen went black and the PC rebooted. When did it happen: This was a reproducible problem occurring when for example I ran the following programs: - Firefox (with several tabs opened) - Graphics Program with a certain image - winrar to unpack something. As soon as I started the unpacking the pc died. - As I said above I did not change a single thing about the hardware configuration of the PC recently. Neither was there any new software. (Not even a Windows update during the two weeks before it occurred and the first time it occurred. - Just updated of my anti-virus program) - I did check for viruses, none found. (Besides: I have a few firewalls, did not read any emails on this system during the time and did not visit any dubious sites - I never had a virus on this PC so why start now?) - I then cleaned out my hard drive (my boyfriend thought that the pc crashed because maybe 11/2 gig of free space wasn't enough - I told him that the weeks and months before there had sometimes been less....) - I ran the windows update - I then checked all my hardware (measured the power supply, checked the temperature, replaced the memory...) no error turned up. The only parts that remained as possible causes were: - Graphics Card - CPU - Main Board as I could not simply replace them. But there were several reasons against them being the cause: - I could play Tomb Raider Legend and do another resource-consuming task (as long as it did not involve winrar, photoshop e.g. elements or itunes) - There was not a single crash when I used Vista and tried to reproduce these events. This was phase one, suddenly and without warning we entered phase two: Phase 2: (still) February 2007 After one of the many reboots suddenly the ATI Control Centre claims that there is something wrong with my graphics drivers. Which brought me back to the idea that maybe there was something wrong with my graphics card, but at that time someone told me that in fact Vista (if allowed access to the partition with XP) might mess up drivers found elsewhere.... And actually I then found that messed up graphics drivers on XP occurred everytime I booted Vista inbetween. So I locked out Vista and everything seemed fine for a couple of days (at least with the graphics drivers). Phase 3: End of February - April 2007 After locking out Vista my problems changed again. Now when I started up a graphics program while listening to music, I tunes would - after changing songs - complain that it could not save the library file. When I closed the error message it would return every time and result in another crash... When I instead closed my graphics program and then close the error message everything was fine. This occurred every time a new song started, every time itunes wanted to update the library file. I lived with this problem for quite a while (till beginning of April) and started to turn off music as long as I was working on photos.... Strangely enough I had another incident where the ATI Control Centre claimed something was wrong. Instead of reinstalling the drivers I ignored it and the result was that my screen sometimes went blank for a microsecond but immediately came back (without crash) I still could play games e.g. Tomb Raider Legend... Phase 4: After Easer (April) 2007 I had finally decided on getting a LCD (22'' Widescreen, : 1680 x 1050, supporting HDCP). I simply plugged it in and adjusted my screen settings. Since then my problems seem to be gone. It's been ten days now and I can listen to music while working on images again... I did not do anything else.... I hope that's the end of it....
